DEPARTMENT HISTORY

Prior to its formation as a Township, early law and order in our community, like others across New York State was in the hands of capable respected citizens.

With the incorporation of the Town of West Seneca in 1852, this process of law enforcement was replaced by part time constables working on a fee basis.  Before West Seneca became a first class town, the Supervisor was recognized as the Chief of Police.

With the rapid growth of the town, the need for an organized paid police force was recognized by those entrusted with the good and welfare of its citizens.

On June 28, 1932 the West Seneca Town Board adopted a resolution pursuant to Chapter 616 of the Laws of 1932 officially establishing the West Seneca Police Department.  George Lyons was named the first Chief of Police.
